The Learning Timeline: Home App

The learning timeline is a running timeline of the child’s learning journey. This initially includes Observations and Moments.  At the moment, it's not possible to view documentation and plans in the learning timeline on the Home app. These need to be done in the web version of Home.

To view documentation and plans on Home web, parents can take the following steps:

  1. Log in to home.myxplor.com
  2. Click on the relevant links ('Documentation' and 'Planning'), as shown below, on the left hand side of the page
  3. You can click on any visible document to view it.

An observation is created by the educators using Playground in the service and can be used in a variety of ways. Typically educators will use observations to record the child's achievement of particular learning outcomes from required frameworks (EYLF etc). However observations can also be used in a more casual manner to simply communicate with families.

Refreshing the Timeline

The timeline should be able to be manually, allowing the parents to request for the most recent information on their children.

  1. Pull down at the top of the scrollable timeline until a progress indicator appears.
  2. Release and the data should start loading
  3. Once completed, the most recent information should be displayed.
Failed refresh: No network connection

When a timeline refresh fails, the timeline should visually return to how it was prior to the refresh. You will receive a notification as to what went wrong. Often this is due to a failed network connection. In this case, please check your network connection and try again.

  • A comment from the logged in user should appear in a grey message box on the right of the screen.

Create Moment

Screen_Shot_2020-02-14_at_1.12.33_pm.png

Moments are a fantastic way to capture the learning journeys of your children. These moments will be combined in the learning timeline with other documentation that gets created by their educators. For now, moments are only viewable by the parents of the children, and not by educators or the childcare service.

To create a new moment:

  1. Press on the Learning tab
  2. Press on the Camera icon at the top of the screen
  3. Select the type of media you would like to attach: Camera, Video, Gallery

Once you have media attached:

  1. Write text under the description (Optional).
  2. Add a location (Optional).
  3. Tag a child (Required).
  4. Press the send icon in the top right.
  5. Wait for the Moment to upload fully.

Adding media from the gallery

Easily add media by selecting a photo or video you already have stored on your device. During the first moment you create, you will need to grant Xplor Home access to your media library.

  1. If necessary, grant the app permission to access your gallery.
  2. Select a photo or video from your gallery.
  3. If you select a long video file, you may be asked to trim the length down to under 30 seconds.

Record a video

Easily record a video from within the app and attach it to a moment. During the first moment you create, you will need to grant Xplor Home access to your camera and microphone if you select this option.

  1. If necessary, grant the app permission to access the camera and microphone.
  2. Use the camera to record a video.

Capture an image

Easily capture a new image from within the app and attach it to a moment. During the first moment you create, you will need to grant Xplor Home access to your camera.

  1. If necessary, grant the app permission to access the camera.
  2.  Use the camera to capture a photo.

Parent cannot see any images in their gallery

If the parent has not granted the app access to their gallery, they may see an empty screen.

iOS:

  • Go to the phone Settings app and scroll to the bottom to find ‘Xplor Home’ and select it
  • Find ‘Photos’ settings and this should be listed as ‘Read and Write’
  • If not, tap into the setting and select ‘Read and Write’
  • Re-open Xplor home and try again

Android (depending on device):

  • Go to the phone Settings app and scroll to find ‘Apps’ and select it
  • Scroll to the bottom to find Xplor Home, select it
  • Scroll down to the ‘App Settings’ section and find ‘Permissions’
  • Ensure that ‘Storage’ is toggled on
  • Re-open Xplor home and try again

Parent cannot take a photo or video

If the parent has not granted the app access to their camera, they will not be able to take a photo.

iOS:

  • Go to the phone Settings app and scroll to the bottom to find ‘Xplor Home’ and select it
  • Find ‘Camera’ settings and this should be toggle on
  • If not, tap it to change it to on (green colour)
  • Re-open Xplor home and try again

Android (depending on device):

  • Go to the phone Settings app and scroll to find ‘Apps’ and select it
  • Scroll to the bottom to find Xplor Home, select it
  • Scroll down to the ‘App Settings’ section and find ‘Permissions’
  • Ensure that ‘Camera is toggled on as well as ‘Microphone’
  • Re-open Xplor home and try again

Location searching is returning incorrect results

Location searching and tagging is powered by Google. If there are issues and the search is not returning the results you are looking for, some tips are:

  • On Android, ensure that the app has access to the devices location for better and more accurate results.
    • Go to the phone Settings app and scroll to find ‘Apps’ and select it
    • Scroll to the bottom to find Xplor Home, select it
    • Scroll down to the ‘App Settings’ section and find ‘Permissions’
    • Ensure that ‘Location’ is toggled on
    • Re-open Xplor home and try again
  • Search for an address rather than a location, landmark or place of interest
  • At this point, no custom locations are supported

Moment failed to upload

Occasionally due to various reasons, moments and the media may fail to upload. Some tips and pointers to help prevent this:

  • Try a different network. Sometimes the wifi may be slow, try switching to mobile data instead.
  • Not all video types are supported when selecting through the gallery, try capturing a video or photo through the app instead.
  • If you are trying to upload a long video, try trimming it using your default photo editing app (ie Photos, Google Photos etc) to something shorter. The uploads will fail if they take more than 2 minutes to complete.
  • If you are having issues with a particular item selected from your gallery, try another photo or video instead.
  • For iOS, occasionally there are syncing issues between iCloud and the photos on your device. Try uploading the photo/video from the device it was taken on
